Gratitude, Thankfulness and Appreciation

This Life

God Is in the Details

Sounds like these three are all in a boat together, having the same meaning. There are subtle differences in these three words that increase understanding of God being in the details of life. In reading this morning, all three of these words were used. I use Psalm 100:4 to express my understanding these subtle differences.

Thankfulness_conscious of the benefit received (mindful)

Psalm 100:4 – “Enter into His gates with thanksgiving, And into His courts with praise. Be thankful unto Him, and bless His name.”

Gratitude_the state of being thankful (feeling)

Psalm 100:4 – “Enter into His gates with thanksgiving, And into His courts with praise. Be thankful unto Him, and bless His name.”

Appreciation_an expression of gratitude (physical action)

Psalm 100:4 – “Enter into His gates with thanksgiving, And into His courts with praise. Be thankful unto Him, and bless His holy name.”

The subtle differences include the mind, the emotions and physical action. All of these differences are included in the Word of God. While you may be grateful for something, you might not always show appreciation for it. While you can appreciate something, you might not always express thankfulness, being conscious of the benefit received. And, while you may have gratitude for something you might not always express appreciation for it.

What am I saying? There are subtle differences in these three words that increase our understanding of God being in the details of life. I just wanted to share this and encourage others that when we stop being too busy and start living, the wonder of God becomes alive in us. While I was thankful for the gift of writing that God gave me, I didn’t always show appreciation for that gift by using it. I do now and am amazed at what He is doing in me.

Becoming sensitive to the Holy Spirit and understanding subtle differences means becoming more aware of yourself, the people you are around and the awesomeness of God. Appreciate your loved ones and be mindful of what they mean to you as well as what they contribute to your life. Be active in showing the gratitude or feelings you have for them. Be more sensitive to your own feelings and check those emotions. Gratitude dispels negativity.

Let’s really live this life and become more sensitive to the Spirit of God, ourselves and others.

  1. Very nice post about being aware of the subtleties of life. A good reminder of how we must worship God with our minds, feelings, and objections.
